The Titleist Pro V1 has been one of the hottest balls in golf for years. The last release in 2017 was a smash hit among the pros. Koepka, Spieth, Molinari, and several others enjoyed major wins shooting the Titleist Pro V1, so it’s no wonder it caught on with the golfing population at large.
The 2019 pro release boasts some key upgrades to its predecessor and is available in a hot new neon yellow version. This was trickier than you’d think, too; in order to retain the same performance as the white golf ball, Titleist had to dye the Urethane cover material rather than simply painting over it (as with the white ball).
This golf ball is built for the high-level player… if your handicap is still in the double-digits, you just don’t need a ball that costs this much. However, if you’ve started taking your game to the next level, the Titleist Pro V1 can give your shot the extra length it needs to compete.
A team of over 5 dozen engineers poured their hearts and souls into developing a top-of-the-line ball that outperforms all of the competition. But we know what you’re really here for – so here is our in-depth Pro V1 and V1x golf ball review.
How Titleist’s Innovations Add Speed and Improve Distance
This golf ball features a urethane elastomer cover system that’s 17% thinner than the 2017 ball. This allows for more energy to pass through the core of the ball for a faster ball speed.
Between the cover and the core, Titleist has added an encasement that gives it a little more springiness, also increasing your ball speed and thus your length by a small margin. The 2019 pro golf ball as an encasement that’s about 14% thicker than its predecessor.
Plus, a re-engineered core gives the new model some extra distance. In fact, you’ll find that the Pro V1x version adds even more distance on top of the extra ball speed.
Changes in the Pro V1x
The Titleist Pro V1x is a similar alternative to the Pro V1. It’s got fewer dimples (328 vs 352) and the casing is about 3% thinner.
As a result, the Pro V1x has a bit of a firmer touch for the golfer who really likes to feel the ball off the head of their club. It has slightly less spin compared to the Pro V1, but as mentioned, it adds a marginal amount of distance as well.
You’ll find that a lot of the pros like the extra control this offers. However, the softer feeling Pro V1 can be easier to control for lower-level players. On top of that, many shops sell the Pro V1 at a discount versus the Pro V1x. Of course, you get what you pay for, and there’s a reason the Pro V1x comes at a premium. It’s increasingly becoming a PGA tour favorite.
“I played some really good golf with the Pro V1x, but it’s clear the 2019 ball is even better.”
– Bubba Watson, Titleist Top Athlete
The Pro V1 has an excellent feel and cracks off the tee with that satisfying “clink” that accompanies the perfect shot. It’s a little softer than many other golf balls, and while it’s definitely firmer than some of their earlier models, the Titleist Pro V1 has set the bar for softness for many years.
This golf ball is much more forgiving than older Titleist releases. It shoots easily in either direction, so a skilled journeyman on the fairway will have an easy time dropping shots wherever he needs. Soft as it is, and cut with a spherically-tiled tetrahedral design, it pelts the green lightly and stops quickly.
Some golfers have reported that the Pro V1x is a little bit firmer than its counterpart. So, Titleist has given you a choice; some golfers prefer a little extra roll on their shots. Try a pack of both and see which performance you like better.
As we mentioned, we’re not the only fans of the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x. Just last weekend, pro golfer Kirk Triplett took home the top prize at the PGA Tour Champions’ Hoag Classic, and he did it shooting a shiny, bright yellow Pro V1x. Other big names behind this great golf ball include Kyle Jones, Zac Blair, Ken Tanigawa, and Mark Calcavecchia.
The Titleist Pro V1: Our Verdict
This ball speaks for itself. From championship play on down to every level of serious golf, it outperforms the competition, sailing fast and far.
It’ll likely be at least 2+ years before we see more improvements to this acclaimed series. We expect to see a lot of great play during those two years. And we can’t find another ball we’d rather shoot. Don’t just take our word for it- this ball has taken off worldwide and gets killer reviews all over the web.
